Warts (mashakaa/masake in Punjabi) are extremely common skin growths caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). While they're not dangerous, warts can be unsightly, uncomfortable, and spread to other areas or people. At Dr. Nagpal's clinic in Bathinda, we offer quick and effective wart removal with minimal pain and no scarring.
Types of Warts
- Common Warts (Verruca vulgaris): Rough, raised bumps — most often on hands, fingers
- Plantar Warts: On sole of foot — flat, painful when walking due to pressure
- Flat Warts: Small, smooth, flat-topped — multiple on face, neck
- Filiform Warts: Thread-like projections — on face, eyelids, neck
- Periungual Warts: Around fingernails and toenails
- Genital Warts (HPV): Require specialized treatment — always see doctor
- Molluscum Contagiosum: Not truly warts but similar appearance — especially in children
Wart Removal Methods at Dr. Nagpal's Clinic
1. Cryotherapy (Liquid Nitrogen)
The most common first-line treatment. Liquid nitrogen (-196°C) is applied to freeze and destroy wart tissue. The frozen skin blisters and falls off within 1–2 weeks.
- Quick, 2–5 minute procedure
- Mild stinging/burning sensation
- May need 2–6 sessions for stubborn warts
- Sessions every 2–3 weeks
2. Laser Treatment
CO2 or Nd:YAG laser precisely vaporizes wart tissue. Preferred for:
- Resistant warts not responding to cryotherapy
- Multiple warts
- Filiform warts on face
- Warts near fingernails (periungual)
- Local anesthetic, minimal downtime
3. Cantharidin
A chemical derived from blister beetles that causes the wart to blister and fall off. Applied by the doctor, painless application with pain/blister 24 hours later. Good for children and those afraid of needles.
4. Electrosurgery/Curettage
Electric current burns the wart (electrocautery), followed by scraping (curettage). Quick, effective for single or few warts. Local anesthesia required.
5. Salicylic Acid (Home Treatment)
For mild common warts, daily application of salicylic acid gradually dissolves wart tissue. This is a slow process (4–12 weeks) but convenient. Dr. Nagpal can prescribe appropriate concentrations.
Plantar Warts — Special Treatment
Plantar warts (on sole of foot) are the most difficult to treat because they grow inward due to pressure. They can be quite painful. Treatment approach at Dr. Nagpal's clinic:
- Initial salicylic acid paring to reduce bulk
- Cryotherapy sessions (may need more sessions than other warts)
- Laser for stubborn cases
- Avoid barefoot walking in public places to prevent reinfection
Warts in Children — Common in Punjab
Warts are very common in school-age children. At Dr. Nagpal's clinic, we use gentle approaches for children:
- Cantharidin — painless application
- Topical salicylic acid for smaller warts
- Cryotherapy with topical anesthetic
- Reassurance — many childhood warts resolve on their own in 1–2 years
Prevention — Warts Don't Have to Come Back
- Never share towels, socks, or footwear
- Wear flip-flops in public pools, gyms, changing rooms
- Keep hands and feet dry
- Avoid touching others' warts
- Don't bite nails or pick at warts — spreads virus
- HPV vaccine covers some strains causing warts
